FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Representative Holding Visits Local Charity for CDH Kids
Wake Forest, North Carolina – Tuesday, May 3, 2016 – During his visit to Wake Forest, Representative
George Holding of North Carolina’s 13 th district made a stop at the international headquarters for the non-profit CHERUBS in the downtown district of Wake Forest. He met with 2 local families affected by Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) and talked with charity president Dawn Torrence.
On Friday, 29 th April, Rep. Holding stood in front of the House to propose April 2016 as “Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Month.” A similar bill was passed in the Senate sponsored by Senator Sessions of Alabama last month. The Senate resolution has been passed unanimously for 5 years, while the House resolution has unfortunately failed to leave committee.
Both the Senate and House resolutions lay the groundwork for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)
research funding. “Without awareness, there is no research,” stated Torrence. “We are so thankful to the congressman for his willingness to meet some of our families and to see exactly who he is helping.
We know his schedule is tight.”
Holding has worked with CHERUBS for 3 years, “and he has become part of our big family. Without Rep.
Holding and Senator Sessions, I do not know how we would make it.”
CDH is a birth defect that affects approximately 1,600 families every year. During gestation, the diaphragm fails to fully form often allowing abdominal organs to reach the chest cavity and restrict lung growth. There is a 50 percent chance of survival with CDH and the cause is still unknown.
Torrence runs the nonprofit CHERUBS from a downtown Wake Forest office. They help over 5,000 CDH families in all 50 states and 61 countries. Their mission is to support the CDH families, facilitate research, and raise awareness for this deadly birth defect.
